As you know, SMEs are facing particular difficulties in maintaining access to credit finance in today’s market environment. While there has not been a credit crunch as such, many SMEs are facing more severe credit constraints and terms than before the crisis. At the same time, they have to struggle with contracting consumer demand and payment delays from their clients. This puts otherwise healthy companies, who provide a valuable contribution to the EU’s economic and social fabric, at risk, namely because they may lack access to the necessary financial means to bridge the current difficulties.
Guarantees are a key instrument to motivate credit institutions to maintain their lending activity towards SME customers and lower their risk profile at the same time. Guarantee schemes, in cooperation with the EU institutions and the national governments, have been swift to rise up to the challenge by adapting existing products, or designing new ones, to respond to the new financing needs of SMEs, such as a greater demand for working capital loan guarantees.
In many circumstances, independently of their legal structure, they worked together with the national authorities and the banking sector to find out solutions that resulted in the creation of specific credit lines with guarantees, a real partnership aimed at helping the SMEs getting access to financing they otherwise could not obtain.
